Education
What started as a modest initiative in providing school fees for a few children has become an ongoing project inproviding fees for 200 orphans supported by the Good Shepherd's Home run by the Missionaries of the Poor in Kampala's Mengo-Kisenyi slum. The volunteer work the brothers do in running the orphanage is really admirable and a must-see; in addition, their work does not discriminate against any orphan's religion, background, or gender. The Good Shepherd's Home also takes good care of senior citizens who otherwise could not cope on their own. Educators and physiotherapists wishing to volunteer some of their time are welcome to contact us or the Home directly.
Health
Recently launched, TAG International is a charitable organisation started by the Wissanji family, which owns Wispro. The first project, an eye camp designed to restore sight in Tororo, Eastern Uganda, was held in May 2010 with the amazing volunteer service and contributions of International Relief Teams (USA). Plans for more eye camps and other health projects are already under way.
Social Marketing & Professional Development
To-date, we have offered hundreds of courses to train people in their specialisation within personal care. We've also given out tools, protective clothing, and sanitising materials. In 2011, we will see increasing portions of our marketing budget going to students and schools, through tuition fees, computers, and mentoring programs… as well as some ol' fashioned fun stuff that students always love.
Environment
Plastic
Instead of ordering our plastic packaging (bottles, jars, lids), we have begun manufacturing our own, saving thousands of litres annually in the fuel required for delivery to our premises.. As much as possible, our waste is re-ground in-house and converted to jars & lids again.
Any waste that we cannot use is delivered to Plastic Recycling Industries Ltd (PRI), a few kilometres away. Our plastic containers bear the code of the plastic materials utilised, in order to assist the company in sorting any waste we send them. In turn, PRI grinds and washes such waste and supplies other industries with the flakes to manufacture other products.
Packaging
Waste generated from supplied products (such as cardboard- and plastic inner tubes for adhesive tapes and labels) are kept aside. We welcome innovative ideas on what to do with these materials; one example is filling Kampala's many potholes!
Lighting
As much as possible, we work under the natural sunlight that comes through translucent roofing sheets and the offices' large windows.
Water
Recycling and reuse is extremely important, but just as expensive. We welcome potential partners to work with us in this regard.
Public Sanitation
In 2003 and 2004, we "adopted" two main city markets as part of our Keep Our Country Green campaign. In 2011, we hope to re-engage with the new management of both markets, as well as of others, and reenergize our effort at helping maintain public hygiene.
What we did in 2003 and 2004 at Bugolobi Market and the open-air Owino Market:
One of the main motivations behind this initiative was to provide market vendors and shoppers a hygienic atmosphere in which to carry out their business.
- Dozens of shop walls and the market roof at Bugolobi were cleaned and painted to provide a more sanitary and aesthetically pleasing environment.
- Dozens of garbage bins were provided to shopkeepers at both markets to help with the collection of refuse, which otherwise is found littered on the market grounds and in drainage channels.
The management of Wispro is aware of the ecological footprint we leave behind as manufacturers, traders, and consumers. We are also aware that we cannot do all we wish we could without the help of others; thus, we are open to innovative and practical ideas that could help us reduce our footprint. If you wish to get in touch with us about this, please feel free to contact us here with attention to the directors.
